Brunch à la Six of Crows

Dec 10, 2016

The book: Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. Six outcasts involved in an impossible heist, battling the duality of existence. (YA fantasy)

"Kaz liked the omelet stands where you could choose what you liked to put in them. The man [… ] gave Kaz all the hot chocolate he could drink. His wife […] fed him hutspot made with smoked sausage […] Margit gave them milk tea […] They’d eaten waffles and fried potatoes […]"

SIX OF CROWS by Leigh Bardugo (Henry Holt hardcover, first edition, p. 206, 208, 211) (YA fantasy)

HUTSPOT recipe

6 large potatoes (peeled and diced); 6 carrots (peeled and diced; 1 onion (peeled and diced); 3 smoked sausages of your choice

Place potatoes, carrots, and onion in a large pot (in that order, in 3 layers). Add water (water should reach the carrots but not completely immerse the onions). Cook on stove on medium/high heat until potatoes and carrots are tender (you should be able to pierce them easily with a fork)—about 15-20 minutes.

Meanwhile panfry the sausages until fully cooked. Set aside.

Drain potatoes/carrots/onion pot, and then mash the ingredients together.

Dice sausages and add to the potatoes/carrots/onion purée. Salt and pepper to taste.

Leftover (super fast) version: potato purée + carrots  (shredded)+ leftover meat (shredded). Salt and pepper to taste.
